Why this recipe works

It’s high in protein, thanks to the *chocolate whey protein* and it’s creamy and nutty, thanks to the Nutella. This mug cake recipe will be part of your weekly, if not daily, routine in no time.

Ingredients

Ingredients to make a mug cake liad out on a pale blue background and labelled.

Kinder Bueno Chocolate Bar
Crispy, smooth chocolate with creamy hazelnut, the perfect choice for this mug cake.

Oat Flour
Using oats rather than flour provides more of a breakfast feel to this mug cake recipe. It also means that the recipe is gluten free.

Egg
The egg not only adds protein and nutrients to this protein kinder bueno cake, but it also helps all of the ingredients to bind together to form the best mug cake recipe. Use ground flaxseed mixed with water as a vegan substitute for the egg.

Chocolate Protein Powder
I used Impact Whey chocolate protein powder which provides an amazing 18g of protein per serving. When taking into consideration the egg and other ingredients, the total protein for this mug cake recipe is 35g!

Nutella
The Nutella surprise in the middle of this chocolate cake replicates the creamy hazelnut centre in a kinder bueno, so we have two nutty moments incorporated in this cake.

  • Don’t over mix the ingredients, as this can result in a tough and chewy mug cake!
  • Make sure the cake is fully cooked after about 1 minute and cook for another 20 to 30 seconds if not fully cooked.
  • Add your favorite chocolate toppings to your mug cake!

FAQs

What is a mug cake?

A mug cake is usually a microwavable dessert/snack that usually comes together within minutes. Usually all the ingredients can be mixed within the mug, making it the perfect quick snack/dessert as there is minimal prep/ cleaning up

Can I replace with a different chocolate bar?

Yes, feel free to top this mug cake with a portion of any of your favourite chocolate bars. Crumbled daim bar is on my list to try, mmmm.

How do I know if it’s cooked fully?

After 60 seconds, the cake starts to rise in the microwave and you can tell that it’s starting to cook as the crust forms on top. When you pull it out of the microwave, it’ll deflate slightly and then you’re good to go. The nutella will provide a gooey, creamy centre so don’t panic if you think this is uncooked!
