The Spag Bowl recipe is super simple to make, packed with flavor and so delicious. Ideal for meal prep, it's filling, high in protein and so satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 3 cloves of garlic (£0.09)
  • 1 onion (£0.10)
  • 400 g (5% fat) lean beef mince (£2.50)
  • 2 tins of chopped tomatoes (£0.29)
  • 2 courgettes (£0.60) (£0.60)
  • 400 g wholegrain spaghetti (£0.27)

Cupboard Essentials

  • 1 tsp mixed herbs
  • ½ tsp oregano
  • ½ tsp thyme
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Chilli flakes
  • Salt & Pepper

Method

  • Start by mincing the garlic and chopping the onions and courgette. I prefer to slice my onions instead of dicing for a bolognese to add a bit more texture.
  • Add a tbsp of olive oil to a large saucepan and add the mince, onions and courgette. Gently fry for around 6 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, boil the kettle and add the pasta to a medium saucepan. Timer set to 10 minutes.
  • Stir the seasoning and garlic into the browned mince, with a pinch of salt and pepper. If you like your bolognese with a kick add a tsp of chilli flakes.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and half the tin of water and add to the mix. Reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Once it has reduced to your desired consistency, serve up and enjoy! You could add some parmesan at the end but I opted for the cheaper option so skipped this stage.
