I honestly can’t believe how easy this low sugar BBQ sauce is to throw together. You get all that sticky, savoury flavour without the massive sugar crash & it’s ready in literally ten minutes. Try slathering the low calorie BBQ sauce on my Juicy Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Breast and thank me later.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • Real BBQ flavor: We’ve got smoked paprika for depth and Worcestershire sauce for that umami flavour. This low sugar BBQ sauce tastes WAY better than those watery diet sauces you find in the supermarket.
  • Super fast: Literally just dump everything in a pan and simmer for 10 mins and you’ve got yourself some low calorie barbecue sauce to dip these Chicken Goujons into.
  • Healthier: My low sugar BBQ sauce recipe cuts the sugar way down compared to big brands without relying on weird sweeteners. And if you’re on a health kick, make sure to give these Healthy Air Fryer Turkey Burgers a try.

Ingredients

Flat lay of five low sugar BBQ sauce ingredients on a green background: sugar free ketchup in a white bowl, paprika, Worcester sauce, apple cider vinegar, and maple syrup. Each item is clearly labeled in black text.
  • Sugar-free ketchup: The ketchup is the thick, tomatoey base of the low sugar BBQ sauce without adding heaps of refined sugar. If you can’t find it, you can use tomato passata with a little extra seasoning.
  • Smoked paprika: This is non-negotiable for getting that authentic fire-roasted BBQ taste without needing a smoker. I love using this to add depth to The BEST Roasted Sweet Potato Cubes too.
  • Apple cider vinegar: The acidity mimics that tang you get in traditional Carolina-style sauces. White vinegar works in a pinch for your low sugar barbecue sauce, but you lose a bit of that fruity undertone.

Variations/ Adaptations

Here are some ways you can make this low sugar BBQ sauce your own depending on your diet:

  • Make it vegan: You can easily make this healthy BBQ sauce vegan – just swap the Worcestershire sauce for a plant-based alternative or soy sauce to keep the umami.
  • Turn up the heat: If you like it spicy, double the cayenne pepper or add a splash of hot sauce. This is my favorite low sugar BBQ sauce variation and makes a great glaze for spicy wings or Crispy Air Fryer Pork Belly Strips.
  • Sugar-free sweetener: Even though this isn’t a completely sugar-free BBQ sauce recipe, you can reduce the sugar even more by swapping the maple syrup for a monk fruit sweetener or erythritol if you are strictly keto. Just make sure it dissolves properly so you don’t get a gritty texture.

Step 2: Stir well and cook over low heat for 10 minutes. The sauce is ready when it has thickened nicely and the spices have bloomed.

Tips for the best result

  • Don’t skip the simmer time as the spices really need to bloom and meld together.
  • Make a double batch of the low sugar BBQ sauce and keep a jar in the fridge for impromptu BBQ nights. It keeps well and saves you from buying the sugary stuff for your KFC Popcorn Chicken Recipe.
  • Taste as you go and adjust the sweetness or acidity to match your preference, low calorie sauce recipes are SO customizable.
  • If the sauce gets too thick in the fridge, just stir in a splash of warm water to loosen it up.

Recipe FAQs

Is this low sugar BBQ sauce suitable for keto?

Yes, provided you use the maple syrup sparingly or swap it for a sugar-free sweetener. It is much lower in carbs than standard bottles.

Why does my homemade BBQ sauce taste too vinegary?

It might not have simmered long enough to mellow out the acidity. Try cooking it for another few minutes or adding a pinch more salt to balance it.

Can I use tomato paste instead of sugar-free ketchup to make the BBQ sauce?

You can, but you will need to adjust the low sugar BBQ sauce ingredients to get the right consistency and flavour profile. Add more water and seasonings first, and then check whether it needs a bit more sweetener too.

How does the sugar content compare to store-bought BBQ sauce?

Most store brands have 12 to 18g of sugar per serving, while this homemade low sugar BBQ sauce cuts that drastically. It’s a much lighter option!!
