I take any excuse not to turn the oven on and air fryer roasted garlic is one of them. You get the perfect, caramalized, jammy roasted garlic which comes together without any preheating of the oven and just 30 minutes of your time.

Why youโ€™ll love this recipe

There are many reasons you should try roasted garlic in the airfryer. Hereโ€™s a few of them:

  • Quicker & easier than the oven: By using our airfryer, we cut down the cook time and the preheat time that our oven requires. Saving us time and money with our energy bills!
  • Deep flavor: Covering the garlic in foil for the first 20 minutes allows the garlic roast and become buttery and soft. Then for the final 10 minutes, the foil is opened to allow the maillard reaction, increasing the depth of flavor.
  • Versatile addition to many dishes: Roast garlic in the airfryer is a fab condiment/ spread to batch make (I roasted 2 bulbs at once) which can be added to soups, on toast, into sauces, into salad dressings- the possibilities are endless!

Why roast garlic?

Roasting transforms garlic into a mellow, sweet, and nutty flavor with a rich, caramelized depth that enhances its versatility in spreads, dressings, soups, and dips.

It also softens the intensity when compared to raw garlic, making it gentler on the stomach for those who are sensitive to it raw.

Ingredients

The main ingredients that make this Air Fryer Roasted Garlic recipe fantastic are the following:

Garlic
This recipe calls for whole garlic bulbs. You donโ€™t want to roast individual cloves as they will burn and you won’t get the same soft and buttery consistency.

Olive oil
We donโ€™t want to use extra virgin olive oil as we are airfrying at a higher temperature.

See the recipe card for full information on all ingredients and quantities.

Variations/ Adaptations

I like to season my air fryer roasted garlic neutrally so that it can pair with a variety of dishes. But if you want to get creative you add different seasonings or pastes. I would add these for the final 10 minutes of cook time, not for the whole duration.

Seasonings you could add: cayenne pepper, paprika, italian dried herbs, dried basil, dried parsley.

Pastes you could add: harissa paste, fresh pesto, nduja paste, gochujang.

Tips for the best result

  • Be careful with the steam when roasting garlic in the air fryer; use tongs to open the foil pouch so you donโ€™t get burned.
  • Wait until they cool to pop the garlic cloves from their skins since you will be using your hands. If you canโ€™t wait, use a clean tea towel to hold the skins to prevent your fingers from burning.

Leftover and Storage Instructions

Refrigerator: Place the airfryer garlic in an airtight container or jar, submerged in olive oil, and refrigerate for up to one week.

Can you freeze roasted garlic? Yes, roasted garlic freezes well; portion the cloves or mash into an ice cube tray, freeze, and store in a sealed bag for up to three months.

Reheat: Gently warm roasted garlic in a skillet over low heat or microwave for a few seconds to revive its creamy texture and flavor.

FAQ’s

Do you have to wrap the garlic head in foil?ย

Yes. For the first 20 minutes the garlic bulb should be wrapped in foil to allow the cloves to soften before they start to brown when we open the foil. Otherwise, the inside could still be raw whilst the outside starts to brown.ย

Do you have to use the whole head or can you roast cloves individually in the air fryer?ย

I wouldnโ€™t recommend roasting individual cloves. They will burn too easily due to their small size.ย
