Why you’ll love this recipe

  • Whole-food fibre, not a protein powder shortcut. The fibre here comes from real dates, oats and almond butter, nothing stripped out and reformed into a powder, so it’s a proper whole-food snack recipe.
  • No refined sugar and no long ingredient list. Just dates, almond butter, oats, a touch of maple syrup and a pinch of ginger, nothing to squint at on the label.
  • Freezer-friendly for batch cooking. Make a double batch on a Sunday and they’ll keep for months, ideal if you’re already into meal prep.
  • Perfect pre-workout snack: I’m always on the hunt for something I can grab on my way out with quick-release energy; this recipe is your answer to that!

Ingredients For Energy balls with Dates

Ingredients for energy balls with dates laid out flat, including medjool dates, almond butter, oats, maple syrup and ground ginger.

Here are some of the ingredients you need for these energy balls with dates recipe:

  • Medjool dates: Soft, sticky and naturally caramel-flavoured, these are what hold the whole mixture together without any added sugar.
  • Almond butter: Adds creaminess, healthy fats and a nutty depth that plays really well against the sweetness of the dates. You could also use peanut butter if you prefer.
  • Oats: Bulk out the mixture and give the balls their chewy, satisfying texture.
  • Ground ginger: my secret ingredient – it adds a nice little twist against the sweet and nutty flavours.

See the recipe card for full information on all ingredients and quantities.

Variations/ Adaptations

  • Swap the almond butter for peanut butter if that’s what’s in your cupboard, it works just as well and brings a slightly stronger flavour.
  • Are you chocolate lover? Stir a tablespoon of cocoa powder into the mixture before rolling, similar to the direction I take in my Protein Balls but with a date base instead.
  • If you want extra crunch and don’t mind losing a bit of the smoothness, fold through a spoonful of chopped nuts or seeds after blitzing rather than blending them in.
  • Others love to roll their energy balls in cocoa powder or desiccated coconut, you can definitely try that out for these! I personally love having them without an outer coating as it makes them easier/less messy to eat on the go.

How to make energy balls with dates

Medjool dates in a food processor, ready to be blitzed into a paste.

Step 1: Blitz the medjool dates in a food processor into a sticky paste.

Blitzed date and almond butter mixture clumping together in the food processor.

Step 2: Add the remaining ingredients and blitz until combined.

Step 3: Roll the mixture into 12 balls, pressing firmly to hold.

Step 4: Chill for 30 minutes to firm up — this step is optional.

Tips for the best result

  • Adjust the texture as you go. If the mixture feels too dry to hold together, add a splash of water; too wet, add a spoonful more oats.
  • Don’t skip the flaky salt to finish. Sprinkled on right at the end, it contrasts with the sweetness and really lifts the whole thing.
  • No food processor? You can still make these. Chop the dates as finely as you can by hand and work everything together in a bowl with a wooden spoon, it’ll take a bit more time but it works!
  • Roll with slightly damp hands if the mixture is sticking to you rather than the ball.

Leftover Storage and Reheat Instructions

Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Freezer: Freeze in a sealed container or bag for up to 3 months. Layer with baking paper so they don’t stick together.

Reheat: No reheating needed, just take them out of the freezer 30 minutes before eating so they soften up.

Energy balls with Dates FAQs

Do I need a food processor to make energy balls with dates?

It makes life easier and gives the smoothest texture, but you can make these energy balls with dates by hand too. Chop the dates very finely and work everything together in a bowl with a wooden spoon.

Can I use regular rolled oats instead of quick oats?

Yes. Regular rolled oats will work fine in this energy balls with dates recipe, you’ll just notice a slightly chunkier texture than with quick oats.

Are oats safe to eat without cooking them?

Yes, oats are pre-processed (rolled or steamed) before packaging, so they’re completely safe to eat raw in recipes like this one.

Can I use a different nut butter?

Absolutely, peanut butter, cashew butter or even a seed butter like tahini or sunflower seed butter (for a nut-free version) will all work in this energy balls with dates recipe.

Can I swap the medjool dates for a cheaper variety?

Medjool dates are softer and stickier, which is what holds these together without a food processor doing all the work. Cheaper, drier dates (like Deglet Noor) can work but need soaking in warm water for 10 minutes first to soften.

How many energy balls with dates should I eat before or after a workout?

Two or three make a good pre-workout snack, the natural sugars and fibre from the dates give you steady, quick-release energy without a sugar crash.

Are these energy balls with dates gluten-free?

They can be, just make sure you’re using oats certified gluten-free, as regular oats are often cross-contaminated during processing.
