What is Camembert?

Camembert is a soft cheese which originates in Normandy, France.

Itโ€™s made from cowโ€™s milk and is known for itโ€™s buttery, smooth texture which when melted, has gooey texture which is mouthwatering.

Itโ€™s taste is similar to brie but camembert is slightly more intense and rustic, which is why the honey, chilli flakes and cajun spice are perfect to balance the intensity.

Ingredients

Ingredients to make the baked camembert in the oven laid out on a pale blue background and labeled with arrows.

Camembert
I opt for a standard sized camembert which is 250g. My favourite brand is Le Rustique.

Honey
The sweetness of the honey balances this camembert cheese really nicely.

Cajun seasoning
Itโ€™s salty, has a mild spice, and looks really nice visually as a finisher for this baked camembert.

Variations/ Adaptations

  • Remove the chili flakes for less spice, or switch with red pepper flakes or black pepper.
  • Add festive fruit or nuts on top like cranberries, almonds etc.
  • Add chilli oil for a french/asian fusion!
  • Top with harissa, pesto, or any other oil based sauce to add a twist on the classic.

How to make bake camembert

Preheat the oven to 180ยฐC/200ยฐF.

  1. Slice the baguette into even slices (Image 1).
  2. First remove the paper from the Camembert. Then place the cheese back in the box and place both in an oven safe dish. Score the top of the cheese about 1 cm deep (Image 2).

3. Add the honey, oil, salt, and chilli flakes to the top of the cheese (Image 3).

4. Bake the Camembert until the cheese is bubbly and just beginning to become golden on top, approximately 15-20 minutes. Serve immediately (Image 4).

Tips for the best result

  • Donโ€™t overcook or your will wind up with a cheesy mess!
  • Choose a sealed cheese round, not a sliced round for baking.
  • If possible, allow camembert round to come to room temperature before baking.
  • Make sure you score the top to let the steam release.

Serving Suggestions

What to have with baked camembert

I love to serve my camembert with toasted bread rounds. By toasting the bread, you can scoop the cheese a lot easier than with less firm, untoasted bread. If you donโ€™t fancy toast bread, you could serve with:

  • Slices of carrot
  • Slices of celery
  • Bread sticks
  • Baby gem lettuce leaves
  • Crackers
  • Toasted pittas

FAQ’s

How long does it take to bake a camembert?ย

It takes approximately 15-20 minutes depending on your oven. I like to bake for 20 minutes to get a gooey centre and slight browning on the top of the cheese.ย

Do you eat the skin on baked camembert?ย

Absolutely! The matured outer rind of camembert and brie is entirely edible and safe, with many people believing it enhances the flavor and overall experience of the cheese.

Can you make baked camembert in an air fryer?ย

You sure can. Cook for 15 minutes at 200ยฐC or until melted and bubbly. Allow the camembert to come up to room temp before placing in the airfryer basket.ย

Do I need to add seasoning to the camembert before baking?ย

Yes, this will ensure that the flavours penetrate into the camembert and not just sit on the top.ย
