  • Healthy: High in protein, and low in fat, carbs, and preservative free, these chicken patties are not breaded and perfect for anyone looking for a healthy meal or snack. I’d recommend pairing it with my Rocket Salad with Sun-Dried Tomatoes which is sooo flavourful.

Ingredients

Here’s everything you need to air fry chicken patties from scratch:

  • Ground chicken: If you’re wondering what to do with leftover ground chicken, this recipe is for you. Just be sure there is some fat in the ground chicken you use as that will help keep the air fryer chicken patties moist & juicy.
  • Seasonings: I use garlic, onion, salt, pepper, and coriander to get the fantastic flavor in these air fryer patties. I know some people don’t like coriander, so you can leave it out – but if you love it, have you tried my Carrot and Coriander Soup yet??
  • Oil: Olive oil and vegetable oil are used in this recipe.  One is to added to the chicken mince (ground chicken) to help keep the patties moist, while the other is used to keep them from sticking to the air fryer basket.

See the recipe card for full information on all ingredients and quantities.

Variations/ Adaptations

  • Coat them in bread crumbs: If you have kids, or just love a crispy breading on your chicken burgers, then definitely add some breadcrumbs to the outside. And make sure you try my Quick & Easy Boom Boom Shrimp too.
  • Add different seasoning blends:  One of my favorite ways to change up a traditional recipe like chicken patties is to change the seasoning blend I use. My favorite is to use taco seasoning for a southwest chicken burger.
  • Try different meats: This recipe is not just for ground chicken patties!  This method also works if you are using any other type of ground meat like turkey, beef, or pork.
  • Add cheese:  I feel that cheese is always a good idea.  You could mix chunks of cheddar into the middle of your burger for some oozing cheese when you bite into it. Or go for something more traditional like a slice of your favorite cheese on top of the air fryer chicken patties in the style of the Ultimate Grilled Cheese Burger.

Tips for the best result

  • Always preheat the air fryer before cooking your chicken burger patties, and keep the patties from touching in order to make sure they cook thoroughly and get a nice crisp on the outside all around.
  • The thinner the chicken patty, the quicker it will cook in the air fryer. If you find the ground chicken is sticking to your hands, try adding water or a little oil to your hands.
  • Flipping the air fryer chicken patties halfway through ensures that they cook evenly on both sides. Remember that cooking times will vary depending on different air fryers and the thickness of the patties.
  • Meat thermometers are important for making sure the chicken patties are cooked to 74C or 165F in the air fryer before eating. I recommend letting the meat rest after being cooked so the juices redistribute.
  • If you want to take this burger up a notch, toast the buns you plan to serve the chicken burgers on. I love toasting the brioche rolls I use for this Creamy Shrimp Salad Sandwich.

Prep Ahead Instructions

To make ahead and store raw chicken patties, make and form the patties but instead of cooking them, place a square of parchment paper between each patty and place them in an airtight container. From there, you can refrigerate them for up to 2 days, freeze them in a regular freezer for up to 3 months, or freeze them in a deep freezer for up to 1 year.

If you want to prep ahead cooked chicken patties, then make the patties as directed in the recipe. Then, let the patties cool, place a square of parchment paper between the patties, and place them in an airtight container. You can place them in the refrigerator to use in the next 3 days, or you can freeze them in a regular freezer for up to 3 months.  You can also freeze the air fryer chicken patties in a deep freezer for up to 1 year.

Serving suggestions

There are so many ways to serve up these delicious air fried chicken patties.  If you are carb free, these are great to just eat like a steak with a side of vegetables.  I also love to cut them up and put them on a salad. Though, if you are a burger fan, then I would definitely suggest a nice brioche bun that has been toasted, and then add all your favorite toppings.

FAQs

Are chicken burgers and chicken patties the same?

Yes, chicken burgers are the same as chicken patties, though many times when referring to a chicken patty, people are referring to frozen breaded chicken patties made by a manufacturer.

How long do you cook chicken patties in the air fryer?

These air fryer chicken patties only cook for 10-12 minutes at  390°F  (200°C).

How do you keep chicken patties from falling apart?

There are several reasons why your chicken patties may be falling apart.
1) The patties may be too wet.  Try adding a binding agent like flour or breadcrumbs.  If you don’t want to do that, you can try drying the patties with a paper towel to try to remove some of the extra moisture.

2) The patties have too much oil in them.  Try cutting back on the amount of oil being used or try to make sure it is just being used on the outside of the patty and not being incorporated into the inside of the patty.

3)  If the patties are falling apart in the air fryer, they may need an egg or egg substitute added in order to help hold them together while cooking.

Can raw chicken be cooked in the air fryer?

Yes! I make everything from raw seasoned chicken breasts to these delicious chicken patties in the air fryer at least once a week. The air fryer is a great way to cook faster and smarter, even when it comes to raw meat.  There is less cleanup, less energy used, and less time put into the actual cooking.

Why make homemade chicken patties?

While it is super simple to buy frozen chicken patties from Kirkwood, Purdue, or Tyson, you don’t have the same amount of control over the ingredients going into the chicken patties as you do when you make them from scratch.

Making homemade chicken patties is simple and you get to choose the type of chicken you use, whether to add eggs as a binder, whether you want breadcrumbs, the flavors that get incorporated, and most importantly, you get to never add any preservatives!
