How to choose the best ribeye steak

Choosing a good ribeye steak to make in your air fryer is easy if you know what to look for.

First of all, make sure that the steak is well marbled.  This means that it has plenty of white fat lines and flecks running through it.  That way you know your ribeye is going to be flavorful and juicy after cooking.

Second of all, you want to make sure that the ribeye (or any other steak you buy) is a nice red-purplish color.  Some brown coloration can also be okay as long as there is no terrible smell that accompanies it.

Which brings me to the third and final tip for choosing a great ribeye steak.  Make sure the smell of the meat has no hint of sulfur or ammonia.

Variations/ Adaptations

If you are not a ribeye fan, you can try this recipe with any other cut of steak you like such as a skirt, porterhouse, or t-bone.  Just know that you may need to change the time and temperature of the cook.

3. Pop the steak into the airfryer for between 3 minutes (rare) and 12 minutes (for well done) (Image 3).

4. I like my steak medium rare, so I cooked my steak for approximately 4 minutes at 400ยฐF(205ยฐC) (Image 4).

5. Turn the steak after 2 minutes. After cooking I used a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature was around 55โ„ƒ (130โ„‰) (Image 5).

6. Then remove the steak from the airfryer, cover in foil and let it rest for 5 -10 minutes, allowing the final temperature to come up to 57โ„ƒ (135โ„‰). Slice into strips and serve with cowboy butter or your favorite sauce (Image 6).

How long to cook ribeye steaks to desired doneness in air fryer

Cooking your steak just the way you like it is what we all strive for when making steak.  And using the air fryer is a game changer for getting the exact doneness you love in your ribeye.  Here are a few approximate time guidelines you can follow if you are cooking a 1 inch thick air fryer ribeye steak.

When cooking your ribeye, use a meat thermometer to determine the temperature of the steak.  Remember that the steak will increase in temperature by about 5 degrees when you let it rest, so take your steak out 5 degrees below where you want it to actually be.  For instance, if  you want a medium rare steak, cook the steak until the meat thermometer reads 55โ„ƒ (130โ„‰), and then take it out and let it rest for 5-10 minutes, allowing the final temperature to come up to 57โ„ƒ (135โ„‰).

Internal temperature of steak after cooking:

Rare desired temperature:  55โ„ƒ-57โ„ƒ  (130โ„‰-135โ„‰) approximately 3 minutes

Medium Rare desired temperature:  57โ„ƒ-60โ„ƒ   (135โ„‰-140โ„‰) approximately 4 minutes

Medium desired temperature:  60โ„ƒ-63โ„ƒ  (140โ„‰-145โ„‰) approximately 6 minutes

Medium Well desired temperature:  63โ„ƒ-68โ„ƒ  (145โ„‰-155โ„‰) approximately 10 minutes

Well Done desired temperature:  68โ„ƒ-74โ„ƒ (155โ„‰-165โ„‰) approximately 12 minutes and above

Tips for the best result

Always Preheat – Preheating your airfryer will help make sure there is an even cook throughout your ribeye and achieve the best sear.

Flipping – Flip your steak over halfway through cooking to make sure to cook it evenly on both sides.

Room Temperature – Bringing your ribeye steak up to room temperature before air frying it helps to make sure the steak cooks evenly and quickly.

Meat Thermometer – A meat thermometer is your best friend when trying to get your desired doneness so you donโ€™t have to cut into the steak while it is cooking.  When you cut into the steak, it loses all of its juiciness and turns your steak into a dried out steak.

Rest is Best – Let your steak rest.  When you let the steak rest after cooking, this allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, creating a mouthwateringly succulent ribeye.  Be sure to tent the steak with foil while it rests so it doesnโ€™t lose all its heat.

Size matters- the size of your ribeye steak will adjust the cook time for your desired doneness- these timings are for a standard size but adjust if you have a really thick or thin steak.

Serving Suggestions

One of the great things about steak is all the sides that go along with it.  Cheesy mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, brussels sprouts, sauteed leeks, asparagus, sweet potato, jacket potato and so many more are all perfect alongside your ribeye.

In the picture, you can see that I served this recipe with a delicious cowboy butter dipping sauce. You can also pair it with my fave compound butter for steak.

Leftover Reheat and Storage Instructions

If you have leftover steak, here is what you need to know about storing and reheating it:

Refrigerator:  Store leftover air fryer ribeye in the refrigerator for up to 4 days in an airtight container.

Freezer:  Freeze leftover air fried ribeye in a regular freezer for up to 3 months in an airtight container and up to 1 year in a deep freezer in an airtight container.

Reheat instructions:  The best way to reheat this steak is in the air fryer.  Just set the air fryer to 400ยฐF (205ยฐC) (no preheating necessary) and cook just until heated throughโ€ฆso around 2-5 minutes depending on the size of the leftover.

FAQs

What setting is best for steak in air fryer?

When I air fry steak, I use the regular air fry setting, temperature of 400ยฐF (205ยฐC), and cook until it is done to my liking, which is medium.

Do you rub steak with oil before air frying?

There is normally no need to add extra oil to a ribeye steak before air frying it, although I added a little oil to keep in the moisture  The amount of fat that is already in the meat will be enough to keep it nice and moist.

Why did my steak get dried out in the air fryer?

If you are cooking a lean steak, there may be a reason to rub a small amount of oil on the steak in order to help retain the moisture of the meat and also to keep the meat from sticking to the basket.

How long do you cook a 1 inch ribeye in the air fryer?

How long you cook a 1 inch ribeye in the air fryer depends on the size of the steak, the type of air fryer, and how you like your ribeye cooked.  In order to get a better idea, you can look at the โ€œHow Long to Cook Ribeye Steaks to Desired Doneness in Air Fryerโ€ section above.
