Why you’ll love this recipe

Here is why this frozen hash browns in air fryer method is my favourite:

  • Restaurant quality: Making frozen hash brown patties in air fryer mimics that deep-fried McDonald’s style crunch without the grease. It creates a far superior texture compared to the oven.
  • Fast & easy: Instead of waiting 25 minutes for the oven, these frozen hash brown patties are ready in 12 minutes or less. Perfect for a quick snack alongside these high-protein Cottage Cheese Egg Bites.
  • No thawing: Thawing actually makes them soggy! Cooking from frozen ensures the best texture. Try this method with Frozen Burgers in Air Fryer for dinner too.

Ingredients

A few hash browns fallen out of the plastic labelled packaging from McCains.

My frozen hash browns in air fryer recipe could not be simpler:

  • Frozen hash brown patties: This is all you need! You can use any brand, but I find hash brown patties in air fryer from McCain, Aldi, or Trader Joe’s work best.
  • Optional oil: A light spritz helps the frozen hash browns in air fryer get that golden color, though it is optional.
  • Seasoning: To air fry frozen hash brown patties perfectly, you can just keep it classic with salt, or try something a bit bolder like the garlic mix from my Crispy Garlic Fries.

Variations/ Adaptations

While the classic patty is the best, there are ways to mix up your frozen hash browns in air fryer:

  • Cheesy melt: This is the easiest upgrade. Just place a slice of cheddar or American cheese on your air fryer hash brown patties for the last minute of cooking. It gets sooo melty and delicious without any extra effort.
  • Different shapes: You can also air fry loose shredded hash browns or air fry diced hash browns. Just reduce the cooking time, since loose pieces burn faster than frozen hash brown patties.
  • Loaded hashbrowns: Top your frozen hash browns in air fryer with cheese and bacon bits during the last 2 minutes. It’s great served with Slow Cooker Chilli Con Carne.

Tips for the best results

  • Even if your machine says it’s not needed, preheat the air fryer to ensure the frozen hash brown patties hit a hot surface instantly.
  • Arrange the frozen hash brown patties in a single layer. If you stack them, moisture gets trapped and they become soggy. Try the Crispiest Diced Potatoes in Air Fryer or the Frozen Jacket Potato in Air Fryer for other easy recipes.
  • If you are wondering how long to air fry frozen hash brown patties, 12 minutes at 200°C is usually the sweet spot, but flip them halfway for even browning. Always do this when making hash browns, diced potatoes, or tater tots.
  • Add your salt or seasoning immediately after taking the frozen hash brown patties out of the basket. The residual heat helps the seasoning stick better.
  • If you just want a quick snack, this is the best frozen hash brown patty air fryer method because you don’t have to heat up a huge oven for one piece. How long to cook hash browns in air fryer actually won’t vary much whether you’re cooking 1 or 10 pieces.

Serving Suggestions

These frozen hash browns in air fryer are the ultimate breakfast chameleon because they pair with almost anything. While some people strictly eat them with scrambles eggs or fried eggs, they are versatile enough for dinner too. Whether you call them crispy potato cakes or hash browns in air fryer, they fit pretty much any meal perfectly.

Leftover Storage and Reheat Instructions

Leftover frozen hash browns in air fryer can be saved (if you have any!), but they lose their crunch quickly.

Refrigerator: Store cooked frozen hash browns in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Freezer: Do not refreeze cooked hash browns.

Reheat: To bring the crunch back, pop them in the air fryer at 180°C for 3-5 minutes.

FAQs

Can you air fry hash browns?

Yes! That’s a common question, and I think air frying is the best method because the circulating hot air crisps the outside perfectly while keeping the inside fluffy.

How to air fry frozen hash browns?

To learn how to air fry frozen hash browns, simply preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F), place the frozen patties in a single layer, and cook for 8-12 minutes, flipping halfway. So easy!

Why are my hash browns soggy?

If your hash browns are soggy, you likely overcrowded the basket or let them thaw before cooking. Always cook from frozen.

What are the best hash browns to use?

I love McCain, but supermarket brands like Asda, Aldi, or Trader Joe’s work just as well. The key is using the patty shape for this specific timing.

Use multiples recipes for multiple non branded brands like Sainsbury’s / Morrisons & they always came out cooked on the outside and a little bit undercooked inside or totally burnt. This was the only recipe where they came out perfect my liking (crispy outside, very cooked inside) so thank you. My favourite are the Aldi brand as they’re very thin, but this recipe allows me to use other brands5 stars
