Whenever I’m making wings at home, this is the method I use because it’s simple, reliable and tasty.

  • Big buffalo flavor: The Frank’s hot sauce bakes right into the seasoning coating so the wings come out smoky, tangy and a bit spicy. Ingredients

A bowl of raw chicken wings, with smaller bowls of cornflour, spice blend, and buffalo hot sauce—plus a handy note on how long to bake chicken wings at 400—all labeled, on a blue countertop.

A few simple ingredients come together to create crispy oven baked buffalo wings. Getting the timing right is just as important as the ingredients when figuring out how long to bake chicken wings at 400°F.

  • Chicken wings: Chicken wings are naturally rich and juicy, which makes them perfect for high-heat roasting. If you’re wondering how long to cook chicken wings in oven at 400°F, this recipe will show you exactly how.
  • Cornflour: Cornflour helps create a light coating that crisps up beautifully as the wings bake. I started using this trick after years of making oven wings, and it gives a really reliable crunch similar to the coating in The BEST Crispy Tofu.
  • Frank’s hot sauce: Frank’s hot sauce brings the classic buffalo flavor with tangy heat and a slight vinegar kick. It also helps the seasoning stick to the wings while baking.

  • Extra spicy wings: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the seasoning mix for more heat. If you enjoy spicy recipes, my Crispy Baked Buffalo Cauliflower Bites with Chilli Mayo is another one I make regularly. When you’re working out how long to cook chicken wings at 400°F, this variation follows the same timing.
  • Garlic parmesan wings: Skip the buffalo sauce and toss the baked wings with melted butter, garlic and grated parmesan instead. Great option if you want something milder. These baked chicken wings at 400°F work brilliantly with the garlic parm twist.
  • Air fryer method: These wings also cook well in the air fryer at 400°F for about 20-25 minutes. When I want something quick and crispy, I often use the air fryer for recipes like my Crispy Air Fryer Pork Belly Strips.

Tips for the best result

  • Patting the wings dry before seasoning helps remove excess moisture, which is crucial for getting the best texture when baking chicken wings at 400°F.
  • Cooking the wings on a wire rack lets hot air circulate underneath them, which helps them brown evenly on all sides. If you’re comparing how long to bake chicken wings at 350 versus 400°F, the higher temperature with a rack gives better results.
  • Leaving a little space between each wing stops them from steaming and helps them develop better color. These wings in the oven at 400°F need proper spacing to crisp up nicely.
  • If you have time, marinating the wings in the seasoning and hot sauce for a few hours deepens the flavor, like in my Greek Yogurt Chicken Marinade with Lemon and Shallot. Regardless of marinade time, how long to bake wings at 400°F stays consistent at around 40 minutes.

Why Bake Chicken Wings at 400°F?

I’ve found that 400°F is the best temperature for oven baked wings because it gives the skin time to render and crisp without drying out the meat. Once you understand how long to bake chicken wings at 400°F versus other temperatures, you’ll get consistent results.

Lower temperatures like 350°F can cook the wings well but usually produce softer skin. Higher temperatures like 425°F can make them crisp faster but may cook unevenly depending on your oven. Chicken wings at 400°F hit that sweet spot of crispy skin and juicy meat.

Baking at 400°F for 35-45 minutes gives consistently crispy results while keeping the wings juicy inside.

They usually take 35-45 minutes depending on their size when you’re figuring out how long to bake chicken wings at 400°F.
