Ingredients

Ingredients to make creamy tomato chicken recipes laid out on a pale blue back ground and labelled.

Chicken Breasts
You’ll end up with juicy chicken breasts with this recipe for marry me chicken. However, you can also use chicken thighs for this recipe if you wish.

Double Cream
Double cream is the secret behind the best marry me chicken recipe since it helps create the decadent sauce. Heavy cream and crème fraiche can be substituted if necessary.

Parmesan Cheese
This tasty chicken dinner recipe is not the same without a cheesy cream sauce. While I prefer using parmesan since it has such a delightful taste, you can use any hard cheese you desire. Asiago and Romano cheese work well with this recipe.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Variations/ Adaptations

The only swap you’ll need to make is to use cornflour, instead of flour and also, some chicken broth options at the market may contain gluten in their preservatives and seasonings. Double-check the brand of chicken stock before purchasing it.

Even though there’s the word chicken in the title of this dish, you can make some swaps and turn it into a vegan version of marry me chicken. Instead of chicken, use soy curls or a meat-free protein of choice.

Use vegetable broth instead of chicken stock. Replace the double cream with a dairy-free alternative (like Silk Heavy Cream) and use dairy-free parmesan cheese. These replacements will turn this recipe into a vegetarian/vegan dish.

Tips for the best result

Pound out the chicken breasts
You can make this marry me chicken dish even quicker by pounding out the chicken breasts with a meat mallet. Thinner pieces of chicken breasts will cook much more quickly than thicker pieces.

Use chicken thighs
If you’re concerned about your grocery budget, consider using chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts. Typically, chicken thighs are more cost-effective, so using them can help decrease the price of this dish.

Season the chicken before searing
While the sauce is quite flavourful, adding salt and pepper to the chicken doesn’t hurt. Season, then transfer chicken to the pan. Be careful not to go overboard on the salt.

Add red pepper flakes. You may prefer spicy pasta dishes. If that’s the case, add a small amount of red chilli flakes while the sauce cooks for a bit of heat.

FAQs

What is marry me chicken?

Marry me chicken is a recipe that includes juicy, tender chicken that’s served in a creamy sauce. It’s named so because it supposedly gets one’s significant other to propose (as mentioned above).

Can I use chicken thighs instead of breast?

Yes, you can use thighs for this recipe for marry me chicken instead of boneless skinless chicken breasts. Ensure you use skinless, boneless chicken thighs as a swap.

Can I use fresh tomatoes instead of sun-dried tomatoes?

No, it’s best to use tomato puree if you don’t have sun-dried tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes can make the sauce too liquidy. It’s meant to be creamy and cheesy.

Can I use creme fraiche instead of cream?

Yes, crème fraiche works as a replacement for double or heavy cream. It has a higher fat content, so it will still provide a decadent sauce for this one-pot marry me chicken.
