Ok so there are two primary ingredients to this recipe – Nutella & puff pastry. But to make these decadent desserts hit the next level, we add an egg wash and optionally finish with a light dusting of icing sugar. The result = a sweet, nutty, buttery, delectable dessert. This is why you need a Nutella puff pastry in your life!

Why youโ€™ll love this recipe

  • Easy: This recipe is fool proof and yet they look so impressive to look at! I whipped these out at a family BBQ for a dessert and everyone couldnโ€™t believe they were homemade. A very fun flex if you want to wow a crowd!
  • Works for any occasion: These nutella puff pastries are a perfect movie snack, a sweet treat to round off a meal, or even a sweet breakfast if thatโ€™s what you fancy! I love the versatility which makes these nutella pastries great to batch and store in the freezer!
  • 2-4 ingredients: Puff pastry and Nutella is a winning combo if youโ€™re a Nutella lover than hopefully youโ€™ll already have these ingredients to hand. You simply need Nutella, puff pastry, icing sugar and an egg for the egg wash!

Ingredients

Ingredients to make the Nutella Puff Pastry in the oven laid out on a pale blue background and labeled with arrows.

The ingredients that make this Nutella Puff Pastry recipe fantastic are the following:

Puff Pastry
I bought 2 sheets of puff pastry which were approx. 350mm x 230mm or 14 inch x 9 inch for these Nutella puff pastry twists. This made 14 twists.

Egg
This provides a gorgeous golden crust to the puff pastry, which both looks good and adds great texture. If you donโ€™t have any egg, you could use milk or water in place of the egg wash.

Icing Sugar
This isnโ€™t fully necessary, a light sprinkling just adds an extra hint of sweetness and also looks fab on these Nutella and puff pastry twists.

See the recipe card for full information on all ingredients and quantities.

Variations/ Adaptations

Add jam: If you love a fruity, chocolate combo, I feel like the hazelnut in the Nutella goes really well with strawberry and raspberry jam.

Add Chocolate:  To make these even more chocolatey, you could partially dip the cooked Nutella pastries in chocolate and allow it to cool to set. This will look like something a fancy cafe or patisserie would do!

Change the Shape: The great thing about puff pastry with Nutella is that you can get innovative with the shapes of your pastries. You can create Nutella twists / spirals like I have, or you could make twisted sticks, simple spirals (like a cinnamon roll), knots, you name it!

Make them Festive: Similarly to the above, you could adapt the shape of these easy nutella puff pastry recipes to suit any festive season, whether itโ€™s Halloween mummies, Christmas trees, Easter Eggsโ€ฆ itโ€™s a wonderful base to adapt!

Egg Free Options: Simply substitute with milk (can be plant-based too) or water as a wash for the pastry if you canโ€™t eat eggs.

How to make Nutella Puff Pastry

Preheat the oven to 200ยฐC/400ยฐF.

  1. Allow the puff pastry to warm to room temperature, then gently unroll it. On a floured surface or parchment paper, roll the pastry out until it is 1 inch longer and wider (Image 1).
  2. Add the Nutella to one sheet of the puff pastry, spreading as evenly as possible. Carefully place the other sheet of rolled out dough on top of the one with the Nutella (Image 2).

3. Slice the layered pastry into strips that are approximately 2 cm/1in. thick, then twist the strips (Image 3).

4. Once the strip is twisted, roll it into a spiral (Image 4).

5. Place all the spirals onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and brush with egg wash (Image 5).

6. Bake the rolls for 10-20 minutes or until browned evenly (Image 6).

7. Allow them to cool for approximately 5-10 minutes, then sprinkle with icing sugar and enjoy!

Tips for the best result

  • When slicing with a knife or pizza cutter, I found that one stronger movement was best for cutting. Rather than going back and forth.
  • Donโ€™t refrigerate after making, this makes the pastry dry out. Store on the counter at room temp and enjoy throughout the week.
  • Donโ€™t handle the pastry too much before cooking, you will not get as much rise.
  • If possible, use a rubber spatula to spread the Nutella as this is the least likely to cut/damage the puff pastry while spreading.

Make Ahead Instructions

You can make these ahead of time if you want to prepare for a special occasion. I cooked the whole nutella puff pastry recipe from start to finish. Then once cooled, I stored it in an airtight container and placed it in the freezer.

The best thing is you can then pop them in the oven from frozen just before your guests arrive – your kitchen will smell phenomenal. Simply pop in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 400ยฐF/ 200ยฐC, add an extra dust of icing sugar and enjoy!

Serving Suggestions

This Nutella puff pastry recipe is the perfect way to start your morning or eat as an after dinner dessert. Here are some great meals you can pair them with:

Leftover Storage and Reheat Instructions

Refrigerator: Keep this Nutella pastry recipe out of the fridge as you want to avoid drying them out! Store on the counter for 3-5 days.

Freezer: Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. You can separate with parchment paper squares if you want to grab one at a time and prevent them from freezing together.

Reheat: To reheat from frozen, simply pop in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 400ยฐF/ 200ยฐC, add an extra dust of icing sugar and enjoy! If you want to heat from room temp to serve warm, pop in the air fryer for 2 minutes at 200ยฐC.

FAQ

Will this recipe work with gluten free puff pastry?ย

Yes for sure- just opt for your favorite GF puff pastry to pair with the Nutella.

Can I cook these in the air fryer?

Definitely yes! The reason I cook these in the oven is to cook all 14 at the same time, but you can air fry them in batches of 4-6 depending on the size of your airfryer basket.

The most impressive two ingredient dessert youโ€™ll ever make! This Nutella puff pastry recipe is my go-to crowd pleaser.

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of puff pastry (ยฃ2.30)
  • 200 g nutella/ hazelnut spread (ยฃ1.35)
  • 1 egg, whisked (ยฃ1.50/6= ยฃ0.25)
  • Optional icing sugar

Method

  • Preheat oven to 200ยฐC / 400ยฐF.
  • Gently unroll the room temp prepared puff pastries. On a floured surface, roll out the pastry, increasing the sheet by around 1 inch lengthways and widthways.
  • Next, add the nutella to one of the sheets of puff pastry. Spread as evenly as possible. Without stretching the dough, transfer the other sheet on top of the nutella coated piece.
  • Slice the pastry horizontally into strips approx 2cm/1inch thick. Twist the strips then roll them into a spiral. Place on a parchment lined baking tray.
  • Brush each pastry in egg wash and place in the oven. Cook for 10-20 minutes, depending on your oven. Theyโ€™re ready once theyโ€™ve puffed up and the pastry is golden and crisp.
  • Leave on a wire rack to cool for around 5-10 minutes (if you can wait that long!) Then top them with optional icing sugar, sprinkled through a sieve.

Notes

  • After preparing, avoid refrigerating the pastry, as it can cause it to dry out. Instead, store it at room temperature on the counter and enjoy it throughout the week.
  • Try not to handle the pastry too much before baking, as this can reduce the rise.
  • When slicing with a knife or pizza cutter, a single firm cut works best, rather than a back-and-forth motion.
  • If possible, use a rubber spatula to spread the Nutella, as it’s the gentlest option and will prevent the puff pastry from getting cut or damaged.
