I love how this is a sweet breakfast, whilst still being moderately healthy, still feels like you’re having dessert for breakfast and also this Chocolate Swirl Toast uses minimal ingredients.

Why this recipe is great

This tiktok recipe Chocolate Custard Toast first went viral a while ago and I think that could be for a number of reasons. Firstly, combining egg, yogurt and maple syrup and then baking for 5 minutes = custard? I had no clue. Secondly, custard on toast? Sounds strange, but it’s so so good.

I think my addition of chocolate swirls adds a fun artsy element to it, where you can practice your decorating skills. A perfect brunch recipe or mid-week recipe as you can whip it up super quickly.

Ingredients

Ingredients to make Custard Toast laid out on a grey background and labelled.

Thick white bread
Any thick bread would work here as you need to have enough depth to indent the bread slightly. I think wholemeal/sourdough might detract from the custard flavours,  but you could definitely try that. For an extra sweet custard toast, you could use brioche.

Egg & Yogurt
The basis of the custard

Maple Syrup
Adds a rich sweetness. You can use honey here to make it more budget friendly, but I do love the unique flavour of maple syrup!

Milk Chocolate
Use your favourite chocolate here to melt and swirl into your custard toast. Feel free to use dark chocolate as also works well on this custard toast.

How to make this recipe

PREHEAT OVEN TO 180°C

  1. Combine the yogurt, egg and honey in a mixing bowl until you have a smooth consistency (Image 1).
  2. Add the 3 slices of bread to a baking tray and then using a spoon or your hand push down/indent the centre, leaving an edge of 1cm around the crust (Image 2).
2 step by step photos, the first with yogurt, egg and honey in a mixing bowl, the second with 3 pieces of white bread in baking tray.

3. Then add the chocolate squares to a bowl.  Rest the bowl in a metal sieve over the hot water, while the chocolate starts to melt (Image 3).

4. Leave the chocolate to melt (Image 4).

2 step by step photos, the first with chocolate pieces in a bowl, in sieve over saucepan, the second with the choclate melted in the bowl.

5. Now pour the custard mix onto the 3 slices of toast, until level with the crust and then swirl the melted chocolate over the custard by adding tiny drops and then dragging a thin object (I used a chopstick) through the drops to create a swirl (Image 5).

6. Pop in the oven for around 8 minutes, or until crispy and golden. Enjoy! (Image 6).

Tips and Tricks

  • Preparing the custard is so easy just adding yogurt, egg and honey and mix together.  The yogurt makes the custard light and creamy and delicious once baked.
  • Spread a generous amount of the chocolate on the custard toast to make that swirl,  dark chocolate provides the best contrast against the custard!
  • You can add extra toppings when serving :
    • Raspberries
    • Strawberries
    • Blackberries
    • Chocolate chips and nuts

FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?

I would prepare and enjoy this when served immediately out of the oven.

Can I freeze this?

I wouldn’t freeze this recipe, as I think the bread would lose it’s crispiness when reheating in the oven and  the custard/chocolate would freeze weirdly. Luckily it’s so easy to make that you’ll have no desire to batch make this recipe and freeze!
