I kept this really simple to showcase the marmite flavor with just a bit of punch from the parmesan cheese.  I hope you love this easy spaghetti recipe that just takes 3 ingredients to make.

What is Marmite?

Marmite was discovered in the 1900โ€™s in England but was not created as a product until 1902 when the Marmite company was formed.  Soon after, it was discovered that marmite is high in B vitamins and was used to treat vitamin deficiencies and other ailments.

Marmite is made from yeast extract and is a dark brown sticky substance with a very strong savory flavor.  It is normally spread very thinly on bread products like toast.  It can be eaten with or without butter.

In the US, you could look for Marmite in a store that sells international food items.

Who is Marmite suitable for?

Marmite is considered a vegan staple due to its high B-complex of vitamins but vegetarian and keto or low carb diets can also use it.  However,  Marmite is not gluten free.

Ingredients

3 ingredients ; spaghetti, marmite and parmesan laid out on a pale blue background and labelled.

Spaghetti – This simple Marmite recipe uses spaghetti noodles as the delivery system for this flavorful mix.  If you donโ€™t have spaghetti noodles, feel free to use whatever type of pasta you have in the pantry.

Marmite – Marmiteโ€™s slogan is โ€œyou either love it or you hate itโ€, but I want to prompt you to try it before deciding.  This recipe really showcases the marmite flavor complexity and is a great way to help you decide where you stand with Marmite.

Parmesan – Parmesan cheese takes this marmite spaghetti over the top with its rich nutty flavor.

Variations/ Adaptations

You can substitute Marmite with vegemite which is a similar product with a similar taste.  Also, try adding some vegetables like leeks, mushrooms, spinach, or broccoli.  They all go really well with the marmite flavor.

And did you know marmite comes in different flavors?  I think a great one to try would be truffle marmite because I love the flavors of both!  Truffle marmite noodles sound divine!

The last thing you can add to this cheesy marmite pasta is bacon or pancetta to add some texture.

How to make marmite pasta

  1. Add your spaghetti to salted boiling water, setting a timer 1 minute of the packet time (Image 1).
  2. When the timer is about to go off, add a ladle of the pasta water to a tbsp of marmite. This will loosen up the marmite to make it easier to evenly coat the spaghetti. Whisk to combine. Drain the spaghetti and add to the pan with the marmite pasta water (and reserve another ladle of pasta water for later) (Image 2).

3. In the pan, add the runny marmite with the spaghetti, the grated parmesan and another ยฝ ladle of pasta water (Image 3).

4. Stir vigorously until the residual heat cooks off the pasta water, the parm will also absorbs the water and leave you with an emulsified yeasty, cheesy sauce. Serve up and enjoy! (Image 4).

Tips for the best result

  • Hang on to some of that starchy pasta water.  It will help thicken up the marmite sauce.
  • Use freshly grated parmesan – this makes it emulsify into the pasta water easier.
  • Adjust the marmite quantity to taste as this is a personal preference.

Leftover Storage and Reheat Instructions

This marmite recipe is best eaten right away.  Placing marmite in the refrigerator or freezer makes the marmite turn solid.  Then reheating the marmite may jeopardize the vitamins in the spread.
